This week I didn't practise every day. I still had wind band the day that I rested, so my lip did have some exercise. The rest seems to have done it good, as I played pretty well in brass band the next morning. Scott wasn't there and we played a few pieces I wasn't expecting, so the solos and exposed parts could've gone better, but generally I was pleased.
I talked to Matt about low notes, and he's promised to spend some time with me. He said things embouchure, making an upside down frown was how he put it, but like he said I think it's a bit different for everyone. I think I'll watch him practise, see if I can work out what he's doing.
In our performance workshop I played the study I've been working on - it's got some odd intervals in and some of it is pretty high, so it's technically demanding. I explained to the class what I'd worked out about breathing and all the brass players nodded, and then we talked about making a technical exercise into music through phrasing. Sally-Anne also mentioned that my lower notes were not as clear as my top notes.
No lesson with David again, we had a concert that day. It went well. I enjoyed being onstage, and Leeds Town Hall is a nice sounding, large venue.
I'm seriously considering entering Radio 2 Young Brass Player of the Year. I'd need a letter of recommendation from D so it's his call in the end. We'll discuss it next lesson.
