The situation is certainly ugly. We're practically brainwashing a society to hate itself. These are the popular "values" though, and it'll never be easy changing what's popular.
yeah. people don't seem to get how every moment, every choice you make is surrounded by this context, this feeling that you can somehow make yourself better if only you find the magic formula to "fix" yourself and fit in. fuck that shit. we're beautiful, with all our wonderful imperfections.
I see parallels in this to the way men are expected to be any one of various personalities to be a "real man". Not putting one above any other, but things like this seem to be an underlying bug in society; one or a few persona archetypes dominate the perception of what is automatically "right/correct".
At first blush though I'd say it's largely maintained by, if not originally created by, an advertising-driven public media, where blanket archetypes are easy to work with (and so reinforce).
I'm torn between "goodness, really?" and passing on something Rachel has just said to me - "I like the idea that patriarchy is just a bug that hasn't been fixed in earlier versions, but maybe there's a patch for it? That should be a thing! Patriarchy patch!" ...I like her brain.
