DawnHFoster asks:
What are your general thoughts about muscles on women? Do you worry about getting prominent muscles when you’re exercising? Does the way you exercise reflect the way you want your body to look? Do you exercise to “tone”, build muscle, or just to lose fat? What are your thoughts on female bodybuilding? Do you think it’s more acceptable for women to have prominent muscles on some parts of the body than others, e.g. arms and stomach, versus shoulders and legs. Would you like to be more muscular?
I answer:
I *am* more muscular. I'm not exactly up to bodybuilding standards but I'm fairly obviously fit and strong. It's the strength that's important to me, and I don't mind who knows it. I've dated guys before who said idiot things like "women don't look good with too many muscles". And there are just SO MANY THINGS wrong with that statement. For starters women are never going to be as "big" as men, which was the implication. Plus you can get fit and be stronger without looking big - look at climbers, usually lean and lithe. Look at dancers, particularly pole dancers who have a lot of strength coupled with flexibility. Is anyone going to argue they are too muscly to be attractive? No, so, I'm glad my appearance now filters out the kind of ignorant douchebag who would tell a young woman that they shouldn't get too strong. It seems to me that a lot of young women probably have this kind of idea in the back of their head, affecting how they exercise, if they exercise at all. It's all just part of policing their bodies, telling 'em there's one best way to look. And it makes women physically smaller and weaker, just like the obsession with dieting to not have a tummy on you does - imagine not eating enough as a teenager, when your body's trying to grow. Gahh. Anyway, personally I think it's perfectly acceptable for women to have as much muscle as they like, anywhere they want it. It makes no difference if someone's male or female, you can usually tell what kind of sport or fitness they prefer (think cyclist's thighs, for instance). I do boxing circuits and weights.
