All good points, I agree that the Govt should do more. As I said in comments above, the point of the article was to stop people bashing fundraisers, basically. The main reason I fundraised was wanting to help people, and having a go when I'm working to do that is unfair and unhelpful. If (at some point) you've got tips as to how someone with a fundraiser's skillset can change the politics of the country so that charities are less necessary, feel free to share them.
Regarding point 3, perhaps that paragraph is unclear; I was trying to at once explain how a fundraiser might get you to rethink what's affordable, and trying to reassure that no sane fundraiser would sign up anyone who would be in financial trouble if they did so. If it helps, I've been on JSA a fair old time myself, and was even poorer as a student, and if you read that bit about how much I was making as a D2D fundraiser you may grok that there were weeks when I had £10 to cover travel to and from work and food. It's not joyous. I've also tried to get people to sign up who clearly spend a lot of money on things I've had to deem unnecessary to get by - it's difficult to retain the "we don't want to drastically change your life" attitude when faced with that, but I like to think I managed.
In other news, I'm pro-Forces, and you might not want to get into that debate with me when tired.
