I'm trying to revise English but suffering a severe attack of the blahs. I'm very interested in the topics, but reading is so much like hard work. :D
So does anyone know where these words come from?
undertaker
enthusiasm
window
cemetary
ardour
meme
I've been wondering about meme in particular because I just accepted the meaning I took from context without questioning the root. It almost looks like it could have something to do with memory, or is it just a reduplication of "me"? I'm sure one of you must know.
"Enthusiasm" is one I read about somewhere, it used to mean something like what zeal does now, but before that it meant being possessed and obsessed and stuff.
Stephen has been telling me lovely new computery meaning of words like "complier" and "implementation", and he pointed out that I will never understand what "thunk" means as it is entirely too specific.
So, on to my next issue. I found this fantastic exam question while revising music, which I planned an essay for and thought quite hard about, but I'd love to hear some other views:
Do you agree that music is more powerful than language? Give reasons for your answer.

can has cookie?
Of course, as a linguist, I'd say that those getting their knickers in a twist about how 'meme' doesn't actually mean 'pointless LJ quiz' have missed the point. Language changes! Go with it!
Can't help you with the others, though. have you tried putting them into your engine du search of choice?

nice to see you're still watching :P
