So my ex just noticed an article on the new Poet Laureate, and pointed it out to me thusly:

"First female Poet Laureate. She doesn't look very female"

...

me: I can't believe you would judge Carol Anne Duffy on her looks!

him: It doesn't matter!

...

Yes. Apart from the fact that I already knew, thanks to the Shakesville post, just... wtf? It doesn't matter that you just threw blatant sexism in my face? What, was it meant to be a joke? Oh but, no, you're just saying it doesn't matter. So now my reaction is invalid too! Fantastic! Have a great life, I know I will!

He really doesn't understand the rage, or how he causes it, sometimes. I need to send him to Feminism 101.

Feminism 101 only helps if he's willing to listen.

*sigh* the thing is, i think a lot of it he honestly just doesn't understand. he thinks there are intrinsic differences between men and women, just like he thinks he's done more of the housework than me over the course of the relationship.
i give up, anyway. i'm not with him anymore. if i can improve his attitude to the world, it will make me more likely to stay friends with him.

hah, that was rather contrary. i meant to say, if reading improves his attitude, i may as well send him somewhere useful to read.

That seems a reasonable goal. (Improving someone's attitude to the world.)
Well, to a degree.

*rollseyes*

If it makes him feel any better, William Radice, who was also trying for Poet Laureate (and who told me that Carol Ann Duffy had got it before it was announced), most definitely looks like a man.

Perhaps you should try explaining to him how this makes it all okay :)

heh. it's just such a weird thing to comment on. i mean, i'd find it weird that the media made such a big deal out of it, except that yeah, she is the first. she's also the first scottish poet laureate, and the first lesbian poet laureate, though of course that goes hand in hand with the whole woman thing ;)
