If you're a horror fan, I highly recommend Asylum (but SPOILER ALERT when it comes to the full synopsis). There's nothing particularly new or groundbreaking in the plot or the way it's made, but the characters seem very real to me. Sure, there are moments where you think, would she really reveal that much if that were the case? But then you think, ah, but these are all new students, trying new things; also (MILD SPOILER) the amount of domestic abuse and violence previously suffered by the characters could seem a little high if anything, but due to the nature of the story it's probably unwise to read too much into that... (END SPOILER) the main character is a young woman with a brain, hurrah, and get this; none of the guys fix anything.
Yeah, I liked it.
ETA: The cast AFAI remember is all white. However, Asylum just about passes the Bechdel test (two women do start by talking about a man, but move on to another topic).
