So I need to write a personal statement about why I want to do a PGCE and how I would an awesome teacher 'cuz I'm so aware of the issues.
*sigh*
First, breakfast.
(As is often the case, if I don't want to eat wheaty things this will involve going to the shop across the road).

I applaud you for knowing what you want to do next.

It's one of some options. Truth be told I don't particularly want to do it, but it would be a good idea, and would keep me out of dire financial straits for a while.
The teaching work you're doing almost sounds like part of a PGCE. Is that something you're considering?

I've been considering going into teaching for ages, but I've never been sure, and I didn't want to go straight into it (hence why I'm not doing a PGCE at the moment). Thought I'd get some experience in school, while I'm jobhunting, to help me make up my mind, so I'm actually a Volunteer Teaching Assistant though Mrs Clarke keeps making me take lessons, which is good experience I guess. The only problem is I don't know if I prefer Primary or Secondary. I like both, and both have pros and cons, but I do enjoy teaching.

I've always thought teaching would be incredibly difficult, and while I know a lot of people in our department (and similar situations) are already tutoring younger/less experienced players, I'm not confident enough to do that without support. So a PGCE is the way to go, considering teaching is one of very few stable occupations in my field. The only course I'm really interested in is the Manchester Met/RNCM one, which specialiases in peripatetic teaching as well as doing basic classroom stuff. You never know, I might learn to enjoy it.

My other major interest is instrument repair, but there don't seem to be any courses available in brass/woodwind repair that lead to qualification, and even if there were I couldn't fund them. So I'll be writing to companies to ask about apprenticeships/entry-level positions which could teach me stuff about this. I can already do a lot of the more basic stuff that many brass players just don't bother with, and some of the "specialist" stuff like lapping valves doesn't seem particularly difficult.

Teaching is very secure, but all of a sudden there are a lot of people going into it. I'm not 100% about teaching oboe etc, I'm better infront of a class and yesterday I was actually teaching some theory! It can be good fun, but it's worth doing schemes where you can be in school. The more contact time you get, the better an idea you get (and it looks better on your application). You'd be a good peripatetic teacher, though I'm not so sure about classroom, but it may work. I've never really seen you in a situation like that.

Somehow you and instrument repair makes a lot of sense in my head. It does seem that only apprenticeships will get you into it though but if you can already do some repairs and show you want to learn it, then they're more likely to take you on. The only thing with that, is that they might not want to pay someone for it, so you might have to call in the volunteer card, but if you do that, it does show you're serious. Besides, it's invaluable experience if you decide you don't ultimately want to do that.

and this is why i'm doing work and professional practice. i'm already on placement with KMS (incidentally - any ideas for what to do with a wider opps group who've only just got hold of enough instruments and still don't have music stands?) and i'd love to go on placement with octave above, but they're messing me around a bit lately so i may see if i can go to rath instead. yeah, instrument repair does kinda work for me doesn't it :)
