Weekly update:
Missed band this week due to illness. Most upsetting.

Two rehearsals and a concert this week with a massed band group, for the Night of the Unexpected - part of the HCMF. We played a half hour piece with many soundscape and ambient, freely played sections. Many players claimed not to enjoy it but it was a rewarding experience overall. Also very loud.

Received feedback on lunchtime concert, quoted in full below. Encouraging, and slightly different to my own conclusions.

Discussed with two of my mentees what they were working on with DT. One in particular is using the same study as I am and it was interesting to compare notes - we both have issues keeping our right hand still when the fingers have to move fast, although it seems my problem is less severe, since DT was holding a pencil behind his to emphasise the problem.

Topics discussed in lesson:

I explained I hadn't done much piece practice due to the demands of my academic work (though I'd done plenty to keep my lip active) and we worked on something or other. Not for very long.

Euphonium makes - DT obviously favours the York, or failing that Bessons. I have a fondness for the tone of Yamahas, but DT is very discouraging on grounds of tuning and a 'razzing' sound when playing loudly. I will still consider renting one for a while, to truly test them out.

Feedback:
'Dear Helen, I enjoyed hearing your play in the Tuesday lunchtime performance recently. You coped well with the interruptions / distractions of the photographer (and the audience's reaction to this), and it did not seem to put you off. Playing from memory was a great idea, freeing up elements of phrasing that might otherwise be more restrained. Tuning up was not particularly successful, as you seemed unaware that your instrument remained very flat - however, when playing, the instrument's tuning settled, so perhaps this was 'deliberate'. The performance engaged your audience, and had many changes of tempo and mood that you brought across effectively. Most of the more technically challenging (faster) passages came across well, even in the resonant acoustic of St Paul's. Take a little more care to close phrases gently, some were rather abrupt / thrown away, and aim to explore  wider dramatic / dynamic range if you can, as this space will carry the sound. You performed with a good sense of presence (not easy behind a euphonium!), and cheerful professionalism. Well done.'
