Very positive lesson. David thinks my technique is much better than it used to be, particularly my fingering. He mentioned that my sound is sometimes a little closed, but that I probably just need to listen to myself more - he suggested playing things from memory and thought the andante et allegro would be good for that, as the end to my recital. I'm fairly enthusiastic about that.
I played the polka again, it went okay. D brought up tonguing, saying I played too heavily and with different style depending on the dynamic. He pointed out that I shouldn't be playing louder dynamics with a harder tongue, and need to work on playing varying styles at different dynamics. My inappropriately hard tonguing was also evident in the baroque piece, a 'Sonata' by Marcello. So the work that i had been doing seems to have improved my stamina, but I'm not playing things lightly enough - probably thinking too hard about getting all the notes out.
In general I've been happy with my playing lately - my embouchure feels almost tight/stiff sometimes, but I think it's basically firmer technique and the change is making me tire more quickly than I had been used to. Lip flexes are getting easier, my breath control is good although actually taking big breaths takes some concentration.
D is worried about the rhythmic (or, rather, the not-rhythmic) nature of my playing, as I tend to speed up and slow down within phrases (and not in an intentional, rubato style). I tend to practice with a metronome, so perhaps playing without one would be better for my ear.
I played two concerts this past week. I wasn't alone in sight-reading some pieces with Grangemoor band and was unimpressed with the conductor's attitude. I'll put it down as good listening experience however, as the band generally stuck together.
