My lesson this week was disappointing, as we did a bit of a mock examination and I played fairly badly. My sight reading was particularly awful, which worried me as I'm usually considered quite good at that. I also couldn't remember some simple scales; I'll blame it on nerves, and havng a headache. Must make sure I'm fit the week after next. On the other hand, my study is sounding okay - D said I should play the pick-ups after the semis stop more positively, it changes the whole feel of the music. There was a passage my fingers stumbled on, which D pointed out the trouble notes in. If I concentrate on those, the whole passage seems to work out fine. A lot of this is stuff that I should really know, which is dispiriting.
I worked on band pieces in some of my practice - I was stumbling in band on things I thought I knew, having had some of the copies since before the winter holiday. I may have relaxed too much because Scott was back, but he actually bluffs a little on some runs, which makes it difficult to sound clear.
A lot of my energy this week is going into financial planning, and it may be that i will need to cut down my practise time (or schedule better!) to get a part time job. A few of my group are forming a brass quintet however, and we have one job booked already; it may be that we can make enough cash from that not to worry about outside jobs. It's also fun, and we're picking lots of silly pieces to arrange for ourselves.
I received a letter explaining that I did not qualify for a place in the semi-finals of the Young Brass Soloist competition. Shame, the prize money would've been nice ;)
