My learning journal is never going to be marked again. As such, it really doesn't need fixing, completing or keeping formal anymore. However I do still think it's good to have a record of where you're at, updated every now and again, so here's the current installment.

Since getting the new euph I've managed to become comfortable with the size, weight, larger volume of air needed and even with using the trigger (although I do still occasionally mess that up with fourth valve... which is very silly :)), so in general it's going well. It's a great sound, it's much more flexible and centred and the top notes are just there, which is very cool. I haven't been doing enough work though. Although my tone is generally improving, and I have enough air for most playing, my upper dynamics are somewhat lacking - something that was commented on by Philip Thomas at my last lunchtime recital - and I want to get lots better :) I've been going back to some fairly basic exercises, things I did last year, to try and improve my lung capacity and simply to get used to being louder on this instrument than I could on the old Besson.

I've entered a contest. In Bromsgrove, at the beginning of May. It's an exciting opportunity, not least because there's a fair whack of prize money, but also because it means working with a pianist - Christopher Stafford, one of our graduates from last year - properly for the next month, really getting to know one another and the music. I'm playing this year's recital plus last year's recital, and hoping to get it all down from memory. Just two pieces to work on in that sense; Graham Fitkin's Glass and the Casterede, Fantasie Concertante. I haven't actually been doing anything on the Fitkin because I keep leaving it at home, so next chance I get I'll print another copy out...

Last term's concert went exceedingly well. I look forward to the CDs. I only realised right before the last piece that we were being recorded, and I'm glad. It went well.

In other news, Dave auditioned for the Catch-it Kebabs today. They're a ska band based in Barnsley, and by all accounts they're pretty good. He's not sure how well it went or whether it's what he really wants to do, but fingers crossed it'll keep him busy for a while.
